The subject of this research was certain methods of computer-assisted explanation applied to Navy training manuals. The report briefly describes: trial of these methods on a specific large example (a chapter of some 9800 words in a Navy training manual, both an original version and a revised version); separating the words of two or more syllables that occur, into an 'assumed audience vocabulary' and a remaining vocabulary of such words that need definition, explanation, or clarification; a dozen operating computer programs dealing with number of syllables, nature of words and their frequency of use in a passage, number of sentences, combination or separation of vocabularies, etc.; and some conclusions.
